The Annual Melbourne four day Moomba Festival means a lot of things to a lot of people.
Originally it was thought to literally mean “‘let’s get together and have fun”. It doesn’t. It was a prank from indigenous playwright and political activist Bill Onus in part to get back at the city council for having deliberately upstaged the traditional Labour Day march with a popular carnival.
Moomba actually means ‘Up Your Bum’.
A parade of monarchs. A large-scale all in brawl. An overhead projector. Probably only one of these things will appear in:
An Unauthorised History of Moomba.
A one-off special event.
Tobias Manderson-Galvin (he) has performed historically accurate roles inc. ‘Captain Cameron‘ (a mashup of James Cameron and David Cameron) in Doppelgangster’s Titanic (2015-16), ‘Hitlerhoff ‘(a mashup of David Hasselhoff and Hitler) in Tom Doig’s Hitlerhoff (2008-09), and the almost dead ‘Walt Disney‘ in MKA’s production of A Public Reading of an Unproduced Screenplay about the Death of Walt Disney by Lucas Hnath (2018).
Teneille Clerke (she/they) is best known as the host of ‘It’s Your Funeral: The Game Show!‘ Since 2015 Clerke has organised the annual ‘Farshans on the Field’ competition; an event that has since blossomed into the official annual Anti-Melbourne Cup/Nup to the Cup protest/celebration.
