MKA’s HYPRTXT Festival presents

Sugar Sugar

by Yve Blake

She’s of age and on a gap year. She’s saving up to go to go on so many travelz. She’s a singer. She’s pretty much got it all going on. Stop asking questions. She’s fine. Mum get out of my room! DANCE SEQUENCE! DANCE SEQUENCE! DANCE SEQUENCE!

Yve Blake perfectly captures the joy and frustration of leaving school and living at home. Of having every choice in front of you and no idea how to do any of it. Except party. She definitely knows how to party. SUGAR SUGAR whips from celebration to disaster, disappointment to kicking back mofo hellz yeah and does it all with a sharp and disquieting irony. This is satire based in a strong Australian tradition with an energy not seen for thirty or forty years but you know what would I know I’m only in my twenties.

Wunderkind Yve Blake is increasingly the toast of live performance in London with sell out shows at Edinburgh Fringe, Battersea Arts Centre, and an upcoming season at SOHO Theatre.

This is her first full work as a playwright. This is it’s WORLD PREMIERE!

First developed as part of Royal Court Theatre’s Young Writers Program

Reviews

“text and dialogue is refined and there are some truly powerful images… great shifts in mood and tempo as well as the colourful, candy-fuelled explosions of eat-vomit-rave-repeat, which are scrumptiously unnerving and vibrant.”
– AussieTheatre

‘THE SHEER INGENUITY AND INSIGHT FROM SOMEONE IN THEIR LATE TEENS IS COMPELLING’
– Timeout

‘SHE HAS TALENT TO BURN’
– Fringe Review

‘A HURRICANE OF COMIC ENERGY…A SURPRISING DEPTH BENEATH HER SUNNY EXTERIOR.’
